Korean Film Festival [Closed]

The Korean Film Festival in Singapore is proud to present its 2020 festival line-up featuring 8 Korean cinematic masterpieces which pay tribute to the theme of family. Despite the delay, the unprecedented global pandemic has sparked the festival’s innovative move to go digital this year through Shaw’s online cinema platform, Kinolounge.

From epic blockbusters to devastatingly emotional and inspiring dramas, the line-up seeks to highlight the unique bond of family and sense of home through audio-visual art. Returning for the fourteenth consecutive year, this year’s line-up is set to feature not only blockbusters but also Korean classic films like “Romantic Papa” and “A Coachman” which showcase the timeless beauty of black and white cinema and its continued relevance.

The relationship between cinema and storytelling has always been closely intertwined. These 8 titles bring focus on social conventions and dilemmas allowing the audience to see the dialogue between emotions and film. This year’s line-up seeks to expose local audiences to breakout stars in the film industry, such as South Korea’s leading female directors in the field of independent films.

Acclaimed title ‘Moving On’, written and directed by 30-year-old South Korean female director and scriptwriter Yoon Dan-bi, tells the story of a young brother and sister staying at their grandfather’s house for summer vacation. Director Yoon Dan-bi continuously highlights complex family relationships with masterful restraint yet powerful resonance through the film, winning her the title of Bright Future Competition at the International Film Festival Rotterdam earlier this year. The feature film also made its world premiere at Busan International Film Festival in 2019, receiving 4 awards.

The 2016 Blue Dragon Film Awards’s Best New Director winner director-cum-scriptwriter Yoon Ga-eun’s critically acclaimed film ‘The House of Us’ holds its place in this year’s festival line up as it explores the ins and outs of family dynamics. Director Yoon Ga-eun’s brilliant ability to see the world through a child’s eyes has allowed her to carefully design stories and create unique worlds full of complexity and authenticity.

As the festival celebrates its annual return, this time virtually, it hopes to be enjoyed by a diverse audience by allowing them to partake in the cultural journey from the comforts of their home through the digital immersion of Korean cinema. Presented by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea to the Republic of Singapore, the 14th Korean Film Festival in Singapore will kick off this November with 8 titles screening over 2 weeks.

May you be transported to the wonderful world of Hallyu cinema in the comforts of your home!
